Best Audience: Advanced Aromatherapists and Herbalists
I picked up The Healing Intelligence of Essential Oils: The Science of Advanced Aromatherapy by Kurt Schnaubelt because I wanted a stronger grounding in the science behind aromatherapy and the use of essential oils in herbal practice. Kurt did not disappoint one bit! This work dives right into the deep end, so to speak, offering a clear if somewhat dry explanation of how the various chemical constituents of essential oils interact on a molecular level with the body’s systems. Kurt goes on to offer a look into how essential oils can be applied to a variety of practices, including Traditional Chinese Medicine and other Asian medical systems. He offers treatment protocols for a variety of conditions using essential oils both internally and externally with solid, logical evidence for why each works.
Overall, The Healing Intelligence of Essential Oils: The Science of Advanced Aromatherapy is organized and reads like a text book. It’s densely packed with information, including chemical descriptions of various essential oils, therapeutic protocols and applications, and safety considerations. Beginners may find it intimidating…those of us with more advanced practices may well find it so, too. Kurt’s style is quite heady but clearly solidly grounded in a strong and science-based practice with plenty of case studies to back him. I sometimes find his chemistry-based perspective a little challenging to absorb, but I am grateful for the opportunity to sit with it until it does. He truly is an expert in the field with a love for his subject that shines through.
Bottom Line: The Healing Intelligence of Essential Oils: The Science of Advanced Aromatherapy has earned a permanent place on my bookshelf.
