What is Family Herbalism?

Herbalism you need to best care for your family is, in short, Family Herbalism. It sounds simple and easy, right? If you do it right, it surely can be. But, it’s just as easy to feel overwhelmed and overloaded by the many natural, herbal, and holistic practices and products available to us today. Beyond that, herbalism is more than knowing which herbal remedy to use when a loved one is ill. It’s about creating a lifestyle of natural, sustainable, healthy choices that range from diet to exercise to gardening and yardcare to caring for family pets and even cleaning house.

What about Certification?

Is there a Certification Process for Family Herbalism?

There is no certificate course, at least no credible ones, for Family Herbalism because the needs of each family can vary so wildly. There are basics most Family Herbalists need to know, like how to best extract herbal properties for medicinal use, but even that varies based on what’s available to you right where you are and what your family actually needs. One of the key tennents to Family Herbalism is Practicality. A good Family Herbalist needs to be knowledgable and practical with the ability to flex and adapt the practice as needed from moment to moment, age to age, family member to family member.

What makes me a the Family Herbalist you want to work with?

Herbalism is like breathing to do you quantify a way of life into professional qualifications?

What began for me in my youth as a mild interest in the natural world evolved over the following decades into a way of life. At first, I picked up the odd book here and there, mostly large compilations of plants with their herbal qualities by authors like Leslie Brenmess. When my son was born, my life shifted, and with it my focus on living the most natural and holistic lifestyle I could arose. I found a teacher (Dawn of Dawn’s Enchanted Garden), and began an odyssey of independent herbal studies that continues today.

This snapshot of the books and programs I’ve worked through represents some of my herbal studies. As with the book reviews I write for my site, I have taken the time to read all the books listed cover-to-cover and have worked with at least three of the suggested practices, recipes, or designed and done exercises based on the concepts covered by the author. In most cases, I’ve done a lot more than that.

Beyond my studies I’ve been teaching and sharing my practice with others for more than a decade. I’ve helped many friends and family members, offering herbal remedies and suggestions, education and coaching, and lots of opportunities to come partake in my many herbal adventures.
