I got Chocolate Yoga: A System of Yoga Techniques for Stress and Weight Management that will Nurture Your Body, Mind and Sprit by Margaret Chester from my yoga teacher, Yoga Will, just as I was beginning my renewed weight loss journey. I’d just set a goal for myself of losing 20 of the 40-60 I knew I probably should lose. Stress was a huge factor in that twenty pounds of gain, and I had a feeling that de-stressing was going to be key to losing it.
I loved how Margaret deepens the practice of yoga’s postures by explaining how to approach life from a yoga perspective. You don’t have to master any one posture. You’ve just got to show up to living…breathe…and be present. She offers some beautifully simple practices for calming and centering (even if, like me, you’re already working on weekly meditation, yoga, and focus) to counterbalance the crazy chaos life can dish out. I particularly like the mudras, which are traditional hand gestures, because you can easily take them anywhere, do them anywhere, and find peace through them anywhere.

For me, at least, weight loss includes a lot of letting go of old baggage. As the pounds melt away, I am usually confronted with the stuff that was caught up in them in the first place – a lot of old stressful memories arise along with hurts I’ve suffered and blows I’ve wanted to protect myself from. Chocolate Yoga helped me create a set of practices that let that stuff go without having to examine it closely or spend energy or emotion trying to fix it. That made those aspects of my weight loss journey easier and infinitely more comfortable!
