Best Audience: Beginning Brewers and brewers with basic skills who want to push their technical skills and understanding into new territory
My son wanted to try fermentation science for his last middle school year of homeschooling. I agreed, as I so love fermenting, and we decided to work with brewing beer. Although I have a personal favorite for learning to brew that’s suepr easy and low-key, I needed a textbook that would support our work AND explain the science of brewing. How to Brew: Everything You Need To Know To Brew Beer Right The First Time by John J. Palmer turned out to be the perfect resource.
For folks who are technically minded or just want to understand what’s happening at each step through out the process, John’s offered a clear and understandable explaination of the fermentation process. He covers the basics of how-to, of course, as well as digging into the basic science of the fermentation process. I personally loved how his explainations helped connect the readings and technical details of the process I’ve always watched to the science, giving me a solid understanding of how those readings and details affect my final brew. For my middle-school aged son, the whole of How to Brew: Everything You Need To Know To Brew Beer Right The First Time was too in-depth. I was able to easily assign sections that made sense for his academic level. The rest of the text offered me exactly what I needed to answer his questions…and improve my own understanding and brewing techniques as well.
I most definitely recommend How to Brew: Everything You Need To Know To Brew Beer Right The First Time by John J. Palmer to folks who want to learn how to brew their own beer and to those who know about brewing already and want to deepen their understanding as well.
The Bottom Line: How to Brew: Everything You Need To Know To Brew Beer Right The First Time by John J. Palmer has earned a permanent place on my bookshelf.
