Best Audience: Homebrewers with brewing experience and microbrewers who want to learn more about the Bock style of beer
Bock (Classic Beer Style) by Darryl Richman is a serious study of the bock style of brewing. I loved the section on the beer profiles of bock in part for their technical aspects. Darryl doesn’t include a lot on the history, but makes up for that in his detailed and focused discussion of all aspects of brewing bocks. The technical markers he discusses in his beer profiles give serious brewers a solid set of measures they can use to hone their own recipes and brews.
Darryl’s recipes include details for extract, infusion, and decoction brewing in 5-gallon and barrel batches. They’re written assuming you are well versed in brewing. If you’re new to brewing, they may be a bit of a challenge. Advanced homebrewers and Microbrewers are likely to be successful with them, though.
The Bottom Line: Bock (Classic Beer Style) by Darryl Richman has earned a permanent place on my bookshelf
