Best Audience: Beginners and folks who seek a better understanding of astrology from a less esoteric perspective

I tried a number of books on astrology (all from the Anoka County Library in Minnesota), but found them either far to lightweight to be useful or far to esoteric to be understandable. At the time, I’d been seeing a tarot reader at Present Moment in Minneapolis who recommended Astrology for the Light Side of the Brain by Kim Rogers-Gallagher as a good intro to the practice. She said it would give me a solid understanding of the signs, aspects, houses, and all the other terminology used in astrology practice without getting into the nitty gritty of calculating charts. It was by far the best recommendation I’ve gotten to date for a book that makes astrology understandable for someone who’s new or relatively so to the practice.

Kim does a wonderful job of explaining and illustrating the basics of the astrological chart. Her tone is welcoming and easy to understand. She relates how the planets and stars form patterns that play out on an individual and world stage in terms that are relatable, making it easier to understand how the parts of one’s own chart. Her descriptions are solid, feet-on-the-ground takes on how each sign (or house, or planet, or asteroid, or aspect) manifests in a human context.

I’ve had Astrology for the Light Side of the Brain by Kim Rogers-Gallagher for over a decade now, and I’ve referred back to it many times. It’s more than a raw beginner’s book in that it covers the basics and beyond thoroughly but it’s an easy approach to a very complex subject. I love that she goes beyond the signs and houses into asteroids and other bodies. I also love that she relates each of the houses and aspects to life on Earth and western culture in a way that’s tangible. Astrology for the Light Side of the Brain is anything but esoteric; it’s a fun read and a grounded, real-world look into the art and science of Astrology.

The Bottom Line: Astrology for the Light Side of the Brain by Kim Rogers-Gallagher has earned a permanent place on my bookshelf.
